Crude Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL) is a reddish-brown, viscous, natural phenol oil extracted from the honeycomb-like structure of the cashew nut shell. It is a byproduct of the cashew industry, and its crude form is a raw material rich in anacardic acid, cardol, and cardanol, which can be processed into a wide range of industrial products like resins, coatings, and friction materials.

In other words, Cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) is a dark brown viscous liquid present inside a soft honeycomb structure of the cashew nutshell and is a very important agricultural byproduct of cashew nut and cashew apple production, produced by the cashew nut tree (Anacardium occidentale).
